ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS

Accessory Dwelling Units are known by several different names: Granny Flat, 2nd dwelling, In-law suites, companion unit, etc. For the sake of this legislation, an Accessory Dwelling Unit is a rentable secondary dwelling with complete living facilities for one or more persons. It can be attached to the primary house, detached from the primary house, or even converted/repurposed space within the primary home.

LOCAL ORDINANCES

The State regulations went into effect on Jan. 1st, 2017, making any ordinance that does not meet the requirements of the state legislation null and void until a new ordinance is adopted by the jurisdiction. As of May 1st, 2018, 12 out of the 19 local jurisdictions in San Diego County have adopted ordinances in response to the state legislation.
